If your child that is living with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) is approaching 18 years of age and receiving services funded by the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF), you’re probably aware that benefit options change once they reach that milestone birthday. Understanding those changes can sometimes feel overwhelming. Evergreen Service Providers would like to share information to help you navigate the options and feel comfortable with your decisions.
Once they reach adulthood (age 18), persons with IDD have options regarding where they reside and how they are cared for. One of those options is our Host Home residential program through which trained and certified individuals open their homes to IDD Individuals and assist them with activities of daily living, medication management and appointments, personal growth, and community involvement.
But this is not a fit for all families or Individuals. Another option, not typically as well-known, is the Family Caregiver program.
Colorado’s Family Caregiver Act provides broader choices for persons with IDD who are already receiving services funded by HCPF, in terms of where and from whom services are received. Individuals can reside with eligible family members who can be paid for providing their care once they fulfill the same requirements that are required of Host Home Providers.
To help you understand your loved one’s choices, we’ve put together a short video that provides an overview of residential services available to IDD adults in Colorado, explains the various waivers, and walks through the options – with an in-depth look at the Family Caregiver option. You can also find more information and answers to your questions at our Family Caregivers FAQs page which includes a downloadable PDF. You might also take a look at our blog which gives you a peek inside the lives of two families who opted for the Family Caregiver option.
